ACC Clinical Competencies for Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants

A Report of the American College of Cardiology Competency Management Committee

Public Comment Period

September 9-30, 2019

The American College of Cardiology is developing a competency statement describing the key experiences and skills of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) as members of the cardiovascular (CV) care team, including both those in general CV practice and those working in focused areas of CV medicine. It also identifies aspects of CV medicine that exceed core expectations and may be maintained or achieved by some general CV NPs and PAs, depending on their background and practice focus. This document is not intended to advocate for independent practice for a particular discipline or outline training standards. Rather, it is intended to delineate those competencies that one member of the CV care team can reasonably expect of other members who play complementary roles.

We appreciate your review of this document to ensure that the competencies are comprehensive, clear, and adequately reflect the expectations of practicing CV NPs and PAs. We also appreciate your feedback on the delineation of what all CV NPs and PAs should know and be able to do as distinguished from what selected CV NPs and PAs should know and be able to do based on career focus. We welcome comments from NPs, PAs, cardiologists, and other stakeholders on this draft, which will be edited based on peer review and public comment before review and approval for publication.
